Dreaming about traveling Central America?

I’ve spent about two years traveling through Central America, moving slowly between countries and often returning to places that stayed with me. From the Caribbean coast of Belize to the volcanoes of El Salvador, the rainforests of Costa Rica, and the lakes and colonial towns of Nicaragua, the region offers remarkable diversity within relatively short distances.

Along the way I’ve explored ancient ruins, quiet beaches, glowing lava flows, and some of the region’s most impressive natural landscapes. Travel here often means shifting between jungles, volcanoes, markets, and small towns, sometimes within just a few days.

A More Thoughtful Way to Travel Central America

Central America is often imagined through volcanoes, rainforest, Maya ruins, surf beaches, wildlife, coffee farms and slow overland routes. But the region is far more complex than a string of adventure stops between Mexico and South America.

Across Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama, tourism touches sensitive questions: Indigenous rights, land and water pressure, conservation, wildlife ethics, migration routes, cultural heritage, voluntourism, cruise tourism and who actually benefits when visitors arrive.

On Unique Universe, travelling Central America means looking beyond the “untouched jungle” image. It means asking who protects the forest, who owns the lodge, who tells the story at archaeological sites, whether local communities benefit from tourism, and how visitors can experience nature and culture without turning either into a commodity.
